These two get confused constantly, and for a good reason: the Beginner Box is made out of Jumpstart packs.
Both give you themed half-decks. Shuffle any two together and you have a playable deck in about thirty seconds, with no deckbuilding. So what is the difference, and why is one roughly four times the price of the other?
The short version
The Beginner Box teaches you to play. The Jumpstart box assumes you already know.
That is genuinely the whole distinction. Everything else follows from it.

It is a volume product. Twelve complete decks' worth of material, enormous thematic variety, and nothing at all to explain the rules.

The cost-per-deck surprise
People assume the Beginner Box is the compromise option because it is cheaper. It is not.
Work out the price per half-deck and the Beginner Box is usually the better rate — and it still includes two playmats, the booklet and the dice. You are not paying a premium for the teaching materials; you are paying less per card and getting them thrown in.
What the Jumpstart box buys you is not value per pack. It is variety and volume: 51 themes instead of 10, and enough packs to hand two to everyone at a table of twelve.
So which should you buy?
Buy the Beginner Box if nobody in the room knows how to play. It is the only product of the two that will actually get you from zero to a finished game, and the tutorial decks are built to be played against each other rather than just handed over.
Buy the Jumpstart box if at least one person knows the rules. One person who can explain the basics plus a box of Jumpstart is the best party product in Magic. Hand any two packs to anyone who walks in and they are playing immediately.
Buy the Jumpstart box if you already own a Beginner Box and want more. This is the natural upgrade path, and the two work together — the half-decks are compatible, so a Beginner Box deck can face a Jumpstart deck with no adjustment at all.
Buy neither if you are joining a local store. Go to a Draft night instead — cheaper, and you get opponents. We go through that in what to buy to start playing Magic.
Is either one "real" Magic?
Yes, both. The cards in both products are ordinary, fully legal Magic cards — not a simplified starter version. You can pull them into a Commander deck later, play them in the formats they are legal in, and they hold whatever value the market gives them.
Jumpstart itself is a genuine way to play that experienced players use for casual nights, not just a beginner's ramp.

Yes. They are built the same way — shuffle any two 20-card halves together for a playable deck.
Do I need anything else to play a Beginner Box?
No. Two players, the box, and the booklet. That is the entire point of it.
Do I need anything else for a Jumpstart box?
Only a way to track life, and someone who can explain the rules — or thirty minutes with a rules guide first.
Which is the better gift?
Beginner Box for someone who has never played. Jumpstart box for someone who already plays and would enjoy the variety.
Are Jumpstart cards weaker than normal cards?
No. Some cards are made specifically for Jumpstart, but they are standard Magic cards with normal legality.
